Introduction:
Water, a vital resource for life, faces growing threats from pollution, wastage, and climate change. TikTok, a global leader in short-form video platforms with over a billion active users, is renowned for its engaging, creative, and diverse content. It enables users to create and share videos lasting 15 seconds to 10 minutes, featuring unique tools such as music overlays, special effects, filters, and trending hashtags.
To promote awareness and inspire action, the TikTok Competition titled “Together Saving Our Water” aims to engage youth and the wider community in creating impactful and innovative content focused on water conservation. By harnessing TikTok’s popularity, the competition offers a dynamic platform for participants to share ideas, showcase practices, and present innovations to protect water resources, encouraging a collective commitment to sustainable water management. The Tiktok water saving competition was started in 2021, and have been organized for four years continuously. The TikTok Water Saving Competition began in 2021 and has been held annually for four consecutive years. It has inspired the creation of numerous outstanding short videos (Figure 1), which have garnered thousands of views. Figure 2 illustrates the winners of Tiktok Water Saving Competition in 2024.

Objective/Aims:
This proposal plans to organize the TikTok Water Saving Competition for 2025 and 2026. The objectives of the project are:
- To raise awareness and inspire action among Malaysian youth for water conservation;
- To promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among young people;
- To encourage youth to utilize social media platforms effectively to advocate for water-saving practices; and
- To foster collaborative efforts in water conservation with relevant agencies.
This project will open to all Malaysians and limit to 50 participating videos. A TikTok video on water saving to be shared on Facebook publicly and tag Water Watch Penang (WWP) and Geoinformatic Unit (GIU), with hashtags #TogetherSavingOurWater, #SaveWater, and #JimatAir. Video length should be lesser than 2 minutes.
The activities of Tik Tok Competition 3: Together Saving Our Water are as follow:
- Registration
- To encourage greater youth participation in TikTok Competitions 5 and 6, scheduled for 2025 and 2026 respectively, we plan to collaborate with geography student clubs from USM, UPSI, UNIMAS, and other universities as part of the organizing committee. Participants will first register via Google Forms to confirm their participation. To attract more entries, a portion of the budget will be allocated for marketing efforts, such as Facebook advertisements or engaging influencers to promote the competition.
- Video making and upload
- Registered participants will upload one video related to water saving tips to tik tok and share the video via other social medias such as Instagram, facebook, etc. The participants will need to tag the accounts of Water Watch Penang, GeoInformatic Unit, etc. Besides that, the participants also need to hashtag “#togethersavingourwater”, “#savewater” and other related keywords to promote the videos.
- Judging Session
- Each video will be judged by at least four judges from WWP, USM, UPSI, PBAPP based on the impact, creativity, content, and quality of the video. An excel sheet will be created for the judges to key in the marks accordingly. The winners will be selected based on the average marks that will be given by the judges.
- Winner announcement
- The competition results will be announced via the Facebook account of GeoInformatic Unit, Water Watch Penang and Malaysian Geographical Association. The prizes and digital certificates will be given to the winners few days after the announcement.

Outcome/Output:
- Immediate Outputs:
- At least, a total number of 30 students are educated and trained to organize water saving competition using the social media.
- At least 50 videos related to water saving will be created under this competition. Along the video making process, the participants together with their friends, siblings, family members, etc, will have better understanding on the water saving.
- Long Term Outcomes:
- This project is expected to produce long term outcome in water saving practices since the uploaded videos will be stored in the social media platform, unless the participants remove from their account. The TikTok videos can be easily shared to other social media as well as during the water saving campaign. This helps to promote the education in water consumption, sharing and applying knowledge not in only schools, but at home, to friends and colleagues as well.
