Under the Negalitres for Schools Programme, Water Watch Penang (WWP) again has successfully conducted a double-education programme in SJKC Union from 8.00am to 10.15am on the 19th of October 2023. SJKC Union is one of the on-going participants of the Negalitres for Schools Programme, and is also one of the Green School recipients for FEE Eco-Schools Programme.
The educational session was segmented into two parts: an education and awareness session that involved the participation of over 800 students and 15 teachers, and a water quality assessment activity involving 30 students and 2 teachers from the Environmental Club.
On September 20, 2023, Water Watch Penang (WWP) conducted the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ River and Water Education Program alongside a Storytelling Program for students at SJKC Keow Kuang from 11.00AM to 12.30 PM. A total of 836 students, ranging from Standard 1 to Standard 6, participated, along with 46 teachers.
Dr. Ng Si Ling, an active member of Water Watch Penang and a senior lecturer in USM, led the educational session, aligning with the program’s objective to enhance water awareness among children. She began by introducing WWP and then delved into foundational knowledge about freshwater resources and the water cycle, emphasizing the scarcity of potable water.
17th Feb 2023: Water Watch Penang and Xylem South East Asia have successfully collaborated for its first CSR programme on River and Water Education Programme at Penang Free School on the 17th of February 2023.
Despite the last day of the school term, the programme was attended by more than twenty Form 3 students. Executive Committee of WWP, together with the Senior Leadership Team of Xylem South East Asia, the session commenced with an opening speech by Dr Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager of Water Watch Penang, followed by inspiration speech by an Mr. Koh Chong Hin, South East Asia Managing Director, Xylem Water Solutions Singapore PTE. As an old Free, Mr Koh shared his experience and journey to Xylem Water Solutions as well as giving inspiration to the students of Penang Free School. Next, Prof. Dr. Chan Ngai Weng, the President of Water Watch Penang, introduced about Water Watch Penang and its 25-year journey in educating the public in water conservation with the aim to create a water saving society.
8th January 2023: Water Watch Penang was invited to give a short talk by Penang Green Council under Kebun KitaR’s Green Education Program managed by Bayan Greentech Sdn Bhd. The Kebun KitaR, a community farm managed by Bayan Greentech Sdn Bhd, is organising a free green education program session per month from August 2022 until July 2023 at Penang Digital Library to educate the participants on urban farming. The Kebun KitaR’s training and workshop will be done according to three main themes, namely ‘Act At Home’, ‘The Future Is A Garden’, and ‘Learn From Nature’ to promote sustainability and encourage the public to lead a healthy life.
The education program started with the introduction of the topic of water conservation and soil health by Dr. Jen. In order to help the participants to raise their awareness about the importance of clean water and appreciate the current adequate supply of clean water in Penang, Dr. Hong then presented and discuss on the local, national, and global water issues and the related topic such as Baling flood in 2022 that caused the water disruption in Penang. Several challenges of water resources management in Penang had also been introduced such as high water consumption of Penangites, and cheap water tariff.
In the final section, Dr.Hong emphasised various water-saving methods that can be implemented by the public in their houses. Before ending the talk, Dr.Hong also taught the participants to calculate their daily water usage. The participants also share their water-saving practice experience in their daily life. There are also many Penangites feedback to Dr.Hong and share their shockingness about realizing Penang is a water-poor state in Malaysia.

The third Salcon Smart Water Program of 2022 was held at Bukit Kiara Federal Park on the October 22nd in collaboration with Water Watch Penang (WWP). Along with representatives from Salcon Berhad, Ms. Chern Meng Gaik and Mr. Kong Qi Yan, 38 students, and 2 teachersfrom SMK Lembah Subang attended the river activity.

The purpose of this river activity is to educate and share information with the students about rivers and water on a global, regional, and local level, with a particular emphasis on Selangor. Dr. Hong Chern Wern served as the program’s lead, assisted by facilitators, Ms. Ong Ke Shin, Ms. Adeline Chong, Mr. Ooi Che Khai, Ms. Alicia Khor, and Ms. Janice Yip as facilitator as well as as well as Mr. Gan Vincent who was the official photographer for the event.
