‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOL’ : RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME AT SJK(C) SIN YA – 2ND APRIL 2024

On April 2, 2024, Water Watch Penang (WWP) successfully organized the ‘Negalitres for School’ River and Water Education Programme at SJK (C) Sin Ya. The program engaged 293 students from Standards 6, along with 10 teachers, running from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Under the guidance of Mr. Hanson Yeoh, WWP Programme Officer, and with assistance from WWP interns Mr. Dane Lim Chiu Tong, Ms. Fatin Azahara, and Ms. Nur Atiqah, the session commenced with an extensive overview of WWP’s objectives and past initiatives.
The discussion then delved into global, national, and local water challenges, with a particular emphasis on water scarcity as a prevalent issue requiring community action. Penang’s firsthand experience with water scarcity underscored the urgency of the problem. Moreover, Mr. Hanson elaborated on various methods for assessing river water quality using macroinvertebrates, or bioindicators, such as prawns, crayfish, and nymphs, found in the river.

Catalyst Event: Igniting Change Through Talks and Fundraising by Stonyhurst International School – 28th to 29th  March 2024, Stonyhurst International School

Led by Mr. Caellum McIntosh, Ms. Tan Xiang Yi and Mr. Austinn Ng, from Year 9 Lower Secondary School, Stonyhurst International School organised a basketball competition on the 28th of March 2024 to fundraise for Water Watch Penang.

On the next day, during the school assembly, as introduction, Water Watch Penang (WWP) were invited to give a brief introduction about WWP as well as the main challenges in water conservation in Penang. Dr. Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager, highlighted on the main water issues in Penang especially on its ‘water-poor’ status and low tariff that leads to high water wastage in Penang.

SALCON SMART WATER PROGRAMME BY A TRAINED EDUCATOR FOR SCHOOLS IN SELANGOR – 14TH OCTOBER 2023, TAMAN PERSEKUTUAN BUKIT KIARA

Salcon Smart Water Programme (SSWP) was successfully organized Salcon in Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara, Selangor, on 14th of October 2023. The programme was participated by 70 students and trained by a total of 8 teachers, from 7 different schools, which were SMK Puteri Titiwangsa, SK Wangsa Maju Seksyen 1, SMK(P) Air Panas, SMK Batu Muda, SMK Datok Lokman, SMK Maxwell, and SMK Seri Ampang. The teachers were formerly trained in the Training of Trainers session held on the 15th July 2023.

This programme was aimed at generating ripple effects of skilled and enthusiastic educators in the field of river and water education by training teachers to serve as facilitators in their respective schools.

SALCON SMART WATER PROGRAMME FOR SMK LEMBAH SUBANG – 22nd OCTOBER 2022, TAMAN PERSEKUTUAN BUKIT KIARA, KUALA LUMPUR

The third Salcon Smart Water Program of 2022 was held at Bukit Kiara Federal Park on the October 22nd in collaboration with Water Watch Penang (WWP). Along with representatives from Salcon Berhad, Ms. Chern Meng Gaik and Mr. Kong Qi Yan, 38 students, and 2 teachersfrom SMK Lembah Subang attended the river activity.

The purpose of this river activity is to educate and share information with the students about rivers and water on a global, regional, and local level, with a particular emphasis on Selangor. Dr. Hong Chern Wern served as the program’s lead, assisted by facilitators, Ms. Ong Ke Shin, Ms. Adeline Chong, Mr. Ooi Che Khai, Ms. Alicia Khor, and Ms. Janice Yip as facilitator as well as as well as Mr. Gan Vincent who was the official photographer for the event.

PGC Exhibition at Kampung Permatang Nibong, Permatang Pauh – 25th September 2022

25th September 2022: Water Watch Penang was invited by Penang Green Council (PGC) and its programme partner, Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai (MBSP), for an exhibition for the community event held at Kampung Permatang Nibong in conjunction with World River Day (every fourth Sunday of September). Audiences primarily locals from Kampung Permatang Nibong, spanning from children to retirees, attended the event.
