SJKC Union 21 Days Zero Waste Challenge 2021 – 17th May 2021 to 6th June 2021

The SJKC Union 21 Days Zero Waste Challenge 2021 ended on a high note in conjunction of World Environment Day. This event, a brainchild of the passionate teachers of SJKC Union in collaboration with Eco Schools Programme (under the Foundation for Environmental Education).

In line with SDG6 (Clean water and sanitation) and SDG12 (Responsible consumption and production), this ‘challenge’ was organised with the effort to educate students on the concept of ‘Water Saving Initiatives’ in mind. Also, to be in line with SDG17 (Partnership for the Goals), this event was co-organised with Water Watch Penang and Malaysia Ecological Civilization Communication Center, in association with SJKC Union Zero Waste Initiative.

Global Water Future: A Partnership Between Kampus Sejahtera, USM and Water Watch Penang – 25th May 2021

Water Watch Penang in partnership with Kampus Sejahtera, USM has organised an online talk titled Global Water Future on the 25th of May 2021.

With the slogan “Clean Water for Tomorrow” this webinar focused on water sustainability (SDG 6) which is to ensure clean water and sanitation for all. Conducted via Microsoft Team from 8.00pm to 10.00pm, this webinar was attended by more than 200 students from USM and delivered by the President of Water Watch Penang, Prof Chan Ngai Weng. Prof Chan’s presentation included an introduction to global, national water issues followed by the definition of water security. To further sensitise the students, Prof Chan touched on major environmental issues affecting water securities in Malaysia. He also provided methods and strategies to enhance water security via stakeholders’ engagement while at the same time, sharing success stories from past Water Demand Management projects by Water Watch Penang.

Phase 2 Water Genius Challenge: Training of Trainers (Teachers) on Curriculum Integration of River-Water Related Topics – 22nd and 29th May 2021.

After months of trainings and preparations by the teachers and students of Water Genius Challenge, the Phase 2 Water Genius Challenge, which is the implementation phase, commenced on the 5th of April 2021. The commencement of WGC at school was to be concurrent with the two ToT sessions. However, due to Covid-19 Movement Control Order (MCO) which has resulted in delays and changes in school timing, the final two ToT sessions were conducted in the following month which took place on-line via zoom, on the 22nd and 29th May 2021.  

One of the implementation processes is the need for the teachers to integrate river and water education component into the school’s existing curriculum, thus, in this final ToT session on Curriculum Integration of River-Water Related Topics, the objectives were:
