‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOLS’: RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME AT SK FRANCIS LIGHT PENANG

7 JUNE 2023 – Water Watch Penang (WWP) successfully conducted the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ River and Water Education Programme for students from SK Francis Light Penang on 7th June 2023. 

WWP Executive Manager Dr Hong Chern Wern commenced the talk by introducing WWP’s history, goals, and past activities. He also presented on the global, national and local water crisis, water facts, water conservation strategies, roles of rivers and other water-related issues.

A total of 200 students ranging from standard four to standard six participated in the programme from 11.10 am to 1.10 pm.

River and Water Education Programme at POWIIS: First Collaboration with Habitat Foundation – 2nd June 2023

2nd June 2023: Water Watch Penang in the first ever collaboration with Habitat Foundation, have successfully conducted its core programme, the ‘River and Water Education Programme at the Prince of Wales Island International School (POWIIS) at Balik Pulau on the 2nd of June 2023. Also, this was the second education session conducted for POWIIS in school after the first tailor-made geography programme was conducted at Taman Jajar Sungai Ara in the year 2023.

Invited by Habitat Foundation and attended by two teachers, 6 students aged between 13-16 years old and Mr. Eric Shaun Seaton, the Comms Manager of Habitat Foundation, this programme was conducted by the Executive Manager of WWP, Dr. Hong Chern Wern.

RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME FOR SMITH & NEPHEW OPERATIONS SDN BHD

27th May 2023 –Water Watch Penang (WWP) successfully organised a river and water education programme for Smith & Nephew Operations Sdn Bhd’s first-ever Family Day at the Penang Botanic Gardens on 27th May 2023.

A total of 30 employees and their family members participated in the programme from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm. WWP Executive Manager Dr Hong Chern Wern served as the programme’s lead facilitator with assistance from four other facilitators, Ms Puteri Nur Atiqah Bandira, Ms Ong Ke Shin, Ms Adeline Chong Neian and Mr Sharvind Sivan, the Comms Intern, Ms Lee Tze Ee and volunteers from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Roots & Shoots Malaysia (RASMA) and SK Bukit Gambir, Penang.

PENANG CELEBRATES WORLD WATER DAY AT AIR ITAM DAM

21 May 2023 – Water Watch Penang (WWP) and Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) successfully organised the annual World Water Day celebration at Air Itam Dam on 21st May 2023.

World Water Day aims to encourage the responsible consumption of water resources and ensure universal access to safe drinking water. The event also aims to raise public awareness about the importance of sustainable management, conservation, and protection of freshwater. Besides, the event focuses on addressing water-related issues and promoting sustainable water management practices to the public.

The event commenced with a balloon-cutting ceremony which involved the Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, WWP Chairman Prof Dr Chan Ngai Weng, PBAPP Chief Executive Officer Ir Pathmanathan Krishnan Kutty Raman Nair, and PBAPP former General Manager Dato’ Ir Liew Chook San.

ACS USM ORGANISED MANGROVE TREE PLANTING ACTIVITY TO CELEBRATE EARTH WEEK

8 MAY 2023 – A total of 300 mangrove trees were successfully planted during a mangrove tree planting activity organised by the American Chemical Society Universiti Sains Malaysia International Student Chapter (ACS USM) at Pusat Pendidikan Kecil Hutan Paya Laut, Sungai Acheh, Nibong Tebal on 6th May 2023.

According to ACS USM, the event titled ‘Earth Day 2023: The Importance of Mangrove Tree’ was held to raise awareness about environmental preservation and sustainability practices, in conjunction with the Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW) organised by the American Chemical Society (ACS). The main environmental goal of the event was to preserve the dynamic biological ecosystem in the mangrove forest at Sungai Acheh, Nibong Tebal.

Besides, the event was organised in collaboration with Water Watch Penang (WWP) as the main partner, Penang Inshore Fisherman Welfare Association (PIFWA) and Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM).

A total of 45 USM students, 2 advisors from ACS USM, 17 participants from ViTrox Corporation Berhad and some members from the local fishermen communities joined the event from 9.30 am to 3.15 pm.
