Water Watch Penang (WWP) successfully conducted the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ River and Water Education Programme for students from SJKC Kai Chee, Butterworth, Penang, on the 4th of October 2023. A total of 32 Standard 4 students and 1 teacher actively participated in the programme, which took place from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Mr. Hanson Yeoh, the WWP Programme Officer, with the assistance of a volunteer, Ms. Yeoh Zhi Ru, commenced the session with an insightful presentation and provided an overview of the organization’s history, goals, and past projects. The global water issues were effectively communicated to the students through the engaging storybook-telling method, titled “The Water Princess,” capturing the students’ attention and fostering an understanding of the privilege of having access to clean water in Malaysia compared to some unfortunate African nations.

The ‘Negalitres for Schools’ River and Water Education Programme has been organised by Water Watch Penang (WWP) for students of SJKC Phei Shin on 3rd October 2023. A total of more than 200 students from Standard 4 to 6 participated in the programme from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., along with 4 teachers. SJKC Phei Shin is a recipient of the Negalitres for Schools Programme registered in the year 2022 and their school was installed with water saving equipment.

Conducted fully in Chinese language, the programme was kicked off by Mr. Hanson, WWP’s Programme Officer, with introduction of WWP the organization’s mission and detailed its water-related initiatives. To instill understanding among the students, he emphasised the global water crisis, its ramifications in Malaysia, and the contributing factors, accompanied by impactful visual aids. Furthermore, Mr. Hanson addressed a pertinent local issue, which is Penang’s low water tariff that is one of the many reasons leading to high water consumption (wastage) in Penang.

On September 25, 2023, Water Watch Penang (WWP) effectively coordinated the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ River and Water Education Program at SJKC Li Tek B. The program engaged 79 students, spanning Standard 4 to Standard 6, along with 15 dedicated teachers. The event ran from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Mr. Hanson, the program’s facilitator, commenced by providing an overview of WWP’s mission and its extensive history of water-related initiatives. He used “The Water Princess” story-telling model to explain local and global water crises, emphasizing water conservation and responsible usage. Next, natural and human-induced factors contributing to water scarcity were discussed, accompanied by visuals illustrating daily struggles in underserved communities, fostering empathy and responsibility among the students. Addressing a local concern, Mr. Hanson highlighted Penang’s low water tariff and its potential to encourage wasteful practices.

On September 23, 2023, Water Watch Penang (WWP) partnered with SJK(C) Chung Hwa Pusat for a compelling River and Water Education Programme during the school’s lively Mid-Autumn Festival Weekend Market from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM. The programme attracted a diverse group of 28 participants, including children from kindergarten, primary and secondary students, working adults, and even some housewives who brought their children along.

The presentation commenced with Mr. Hanson Yeoh, WWP’s Programme Officer, providing an introduction to WWP’s historical background, vision, and its ultimate goal of fostering a water-saving society. Following this, Mr. Hanson Yeoh delved into a comprehensive discussion about the global, national, and local instances of water crises and their implications. During his presentation, he utilized the storybook “The Water Princess” to underscore the water crisis experienced by an African nation, emphasizing the importance of appreciating our access to clean drinking water every day. Notably, the kindergarten children in the audience were particularly captivated by this story.

The ‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOLS’ education talk, organized by Water Watch Penang (WWP), took place at SJK (T) Bukit Mertajam on September 26, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This event was attended by a total of 30 students from Standards 4 and 5, accompanied by 1 teacher, Ms. Poorani. 

Dr. Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager of WWP, initiated the session by providing a brief introduction to Water Watch Penang’s objectives, its previous initiatives, and ongoing activities.

Subsequently, the trained facilitators, Ms. Naaga Lechume and Ms. Divya Sree, both interns at WWP, conducted the session fully in Tamil language. They explained to the students regarding water-related concerns extending beyond Penang, covering global, national, and local water challenges. They also explored various innovative technologies and strategies for conserving water resources, along with explaining the process of evaluating river water quality.
