‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOLS’: RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME AT SJKC SIN MIN– 19th SEPTEMBER 2023

Water Watch Penang (WWP) has successfully executed the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ River and Water Education Program at SJKC Sin Min, Balik Pulau, Penang, on September 19, 2023. A total of 24 students, ranging from Standard 1 to Standard 6, along with three teachers, actively participated in this enlightening program from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM.

The program commenced with Mr. Hanson Yeoh, the Programme Officer of WWP, delivering an insightful presentation. He provided a comprehensive overview of WWP’s historical background, objectives, and past endeavors. Moreover, he delved into the critical water-related issues on a global, national, and local scale, presenting essential water-related facts, strategies for water conservation, and the significant roles that rivers play in our environment and society.

“NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOLS”: RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAM AT SK KONGSI – SEPTEMBER 20, 2023

On September 20, 2023, Water Watch Penang (WWP) successfully conducted the River and Water Education Program ‘Negalitres for Schools’ for students from SK Kongsi, Balik Pulau, Penang.

More than 200 students, ranging from Standard 4 to Standard 6, along with five teachers, participated in this program from 10:30am to 12.30pm

Dr. Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager of WWP, initiated the session by providing a brief explanation about the organization and its goals. This explanation also encompassed the entire history of WWP, past initiatives, and ongoing activities related to water, which are part of WWP’s mission to raise awareness about global, national, and local water issues and challenges.

WEBINAR IN CONJUNCTION WITH WORLD RIVER DAY NATIONAL LEVEL 2023 – WATERWAYS IN OUR COMMUNITIES

The “Waterways In Our Communities” webinar, organized in celebration of World River Day at the national level, brought together a diverse audience. This virtual event was held on September 20, 2023, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. via the Zoom application. It served as a significant platform for fostering dialogue and raising awareness about the importance of preserving our waterways, focusing mainly on rivers. 

The webinar panel comprised three experts: YBRS. IR. Marenawati Binti Abd Malek, Director of River Basin Management from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage; YBHG. PROF. Dr. Chan Ngai Weng, President of Water Watch Penang (WWP); and YBRS. Tuan Haji Mansor Bin Abdul Ghani, Deputy Secretary of Friends of Rivers Malaysia. The moderator was Mdm. Siti Nooraznie Binti Abdul Rahim, Chief Assistance Secretary in the Water Resources Division from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change.

‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOLS’: RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME AT SJK (T) Subramaniya Barathee – 19 SEPTEMBER 2023

The ‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOLS’ educational talk, organized by Water Watch Penang (WWP), took place at SJK (T) Subramaniya Barathee on September 19, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The program was attended by a total of 37 students from Standard 5, accompanied by two teachers.

Dr. Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager of WWP, began the session by providing a brief explanation of Water Watch Penang and its overarching aims, as well as an outline of the program’s previous operations.

Following that, the passionate facilitators, Ms. Naaga Lechume and Ms. Divya Sree, both interning at WWP, led the session in Tamil. They delved into important water-related issues that extend beyond Penang, starting with discussions of global, governmental, and local water challenges. They also explored numerous innovative technologies and ways to conserve water resources, along with the process of assessing river water quality.

The educational highlight of the event was a detailed presentation about river macroinvertebrates. The students were taught about how macroinvertebrates are caught and identified to measure the health of the river ecosystem. They were shown videos of nymphs from stoneflies, dobsonflies, and dragonflies, sparking the students’ curiosity.

Quizzes were held in between the talks, and the winners each received prizes. Additionally, students were provided with the Water Saving Guidebook courtesy of PBAPP. Water Watch Penang would like to express its gratitude to SJK (T) Subramaniya Barathee for allowing us to organize and carry out this Negalitres for Schools Programme.

‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOLS’: RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME AT SK TAMAN SENANGAN, BUTTERWORTH, PENANG – 14 SEPTEMBER 2023

14th September 2023 – Water Watch Penang successfully held ‘Negalitres for Schools’ on 14 September 2023, from 10.40 a.m. to 12.40 p.m. at SK Taman Senangan in Butterworth, Pulau Pinang.

The programme was attended by 105 Standard 5 students and 13 teachers, who were instructed on water education by a trained intern/facilitator, Ms Khairul Barieyah, who assisted the Water Watch Penang programme officer, Mr Hanson Yeoh.
