Water Watch Penang Makes a Splash in Eco Fest 2024 at UTAR Kampar

The Eco Fest 2024, organized by the Community Service Society of University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in Kampar, aimed to promote eco-friendly practices and sustainable living. Water Watch Penang (WWP), led by the Programme Officer, Mr. Hanson Yeoh and assisted by intern, Mr. Dane Lim, provided water conservation insights to Utarians and the public.

Held on February 27th and 28th, the objective of the event was to facilitate discussions and exchange on environmental conservation by various environmental organization. WWP’s focused on water-related education, starting with Mr. Hanson Yeoh giving an overview of WWP’s history and goals. He distributed information about ongoing activities such as River and Water Education Programme, emphasizing the importance of assessments using physical, chemical, and biological methods to gauge river water quality.  Additionally, he highlighted Negalitres for Schools, a program involving the installation of water-saving equipment and an education program to reduce water consumption, along with other CSR programmes.

SMK ABDULLAH MUNSHI DIVES INTO THE YEAR’S PREMIER RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME

On January 29, 2024, Water Watch Penang (WWP) commenced the year with the first river and water education program at the Penang Botanical Garden. SMK Abdullah Munshi, also part of the Negalitres for Schools program and the GREW Training of Trainers (TOT) River and Water Education program, participated in this educational initiative.

A group of 28 students and 2 teachers engaged in the program from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Led by Mr. Hanson Yeoh, this program received support from trained facilitators from Universiti Sains Malaysia, including Mr. Yee Jean Chai, Ms. Khairul Barieyah, and Ms. Divya. The river activity, comprising two sessions, guided participants on a hands-on journey.

WWP WELCOMES OUR NEW INTERN, Mr. DANE LIM CHIU TONG

Meet Mr. Dane Lim Chiu Tong, a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Communication (Honours) in Journalism at UTAR Kampar. Positioned as an observer of the world, he aspires to explore an unfamiliar yet crucial domain through his internship with Water Watch Penang (WWP) – the realms of environmental conservation. As a proud Klang Kia, he also seeks to embark on a journey of exploration in this dynamic and unfamiliar city.

However, Dane is not content to remain a passive observer. Eager to immerse himself in the dynamic landscape of news reporting and storytelling, he sees the internship with WWP as the ideal platform. Here, his aspirations extend beyond honing communication skills; he envisions delving into the intricacies of water analysis, using this hands-on experience as a gateway to comprehensive knowledge in nature and green technology. Moreover, WWP’s commitment to organizing outdoor activities, including nature excursions and outdoor education, aligns seamlessly with his journalistic spirit, adding an extra layer of excitement to his internship.

RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME FOR SMK TELUK KUMBAR IN COLLABORATION WITH THE HABITAT FOUNDATION

On 11th December 2023, Water Watch Penang (WWP) and The Habitat Foundation successfully conducted a river and water education program for SMK Teluk Kumbar at the Penang Botanical Garden.

As the final education program of the year 2023, the Habitat Foundation organized this educational initiative as part of its Field Excursion for Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve (PHBR) Gateways, with sponsorship from CIMB Islamic. Water Watch Penang (WWP) was invited to facilitate an interactive and practical river activity, imparting knowledge on global, regional, and local water crises, and emphasizing the crucial importance of rivers as a vital water resource.

A group comprising 25 students and 2 teachers from SMK Teluk Kumbar actively participated in the program, which ran from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The program was led by Mr. Hanson Yeoh, Program Officer of WWP, with assistance from the trained facilitator, Mr. Yee Jean Chai, and the intern from CGSS USM, Ms. Durgadewi Thurairaj. Additionally, The Habitat Foundation team members played integral roles in the facilitation of the program.

‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOLS’: RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME AT SJKC CHONG KUANG – 29TH NOV 2023

On November 29, 2023, Water Watch Penang (WWP) successfully implemented the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ River and Water Education Programme at SJKC Chong Kuang. The program involved 34 students and 1 teacher and took place from 7:40 am to 9:10 am.

Mr. Hanson Yeoh, the WWP Programme Officer, along with assistance from volunteer Ms. Yeoh Zhi Ru, began the session with a presentation covering the organization’s history, objectives, and past projects. Subsequently, the students explored global, national, and local water crises, with a focus on Penang as a water-scarce state, highlighting that its primary water source is Sungai Muda in Kedah. As SJKC Chong Kuang is from the Seberang Perai Selatan (Southern) District, Mr. Hanson also highlighted water disruption issues in the area at Taman Seruling Emas and Taman Widuri. He stressed the importance of using water wisely in the affected area to ensure better water pressure. Overall, ensuring water security requires a collective effort from everyone.
