RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME IN CONJUNCTION AT NORTHERN LIGHTS PRIVATE SCHOOL (NLPS) – 10TH DECEMBER 2024

On 10th December 2024, Water Watch Penang (WWP) organized the River and Water Education Programme in conjunction at Northern Lights Private School (NLPS)engaging 110 students of Standard 5 and Form 1 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. The programme started with a welcoming speech by a student as an emcee. Then, the programme was continued by Dr. Hong Chern Wern, WWP’s Executive Manager who briefly introduced about WWP, its mission, vision and activities with supported by Education Officers which are Ms. Nur Atiqah and Ms. Nur Fatin Azahara.

Other than that, Dr. Hong led an in-depth discussion on regional, national, and international water challenges, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing water shortage. She pointed out that despite Penang having the lowest water rates in Malaysia, it still has the highest water consumption. The students received a briefing on the worldwide state of water resources, with a focus on the difficulties faced by African countries in securing clean water. Additionally, they learned about the health risks of consuming contaminated water out of necessity. As part of the program, students were also taught and guided on how to calculate their water usage from their water bills.

To further enhance students’ understanding of water conservation, Dr. Hong outlined several water-saving techniques that can be implemented both at home and within the school. One of the strategies introduced was the installation of an automatic push tap at the school as part of this program. This tap conserves water by automatically shutting off a few seconds after use. Then, he also explained that practicing mindfulness with respect to water involves being conscious of how our actions impact water resources, both in terms of quantity and quality. Because of this, students could play an important role in promoting water conservation and preventing water pollution. By learning about local water problems, like the condition of nearby rivers or issues like water shortages, they could inspire others to take action.

After the session, Dr. Hong toured the school ground providing suggestions on rainwater harvesting projects to the Penang Green School project team.

WWP extended heartfelt gratitude to Northern Lights Private School (NLPS) for hosting us. For further inquiries, contact Dr. Hong Chern Wern at hong.wwp@gmail.com or WWP at +6019-5751253.
