Learning about Rainwater Harvesting and Water Audit at Greenastic Camp 2024 – SJKC Union 2024.

On 26th October 2024, Water Watch Penang participated as a resource ‘person’ at Greenastic Camp 2024 in SJKC Union. This camp was organised by SJKC Union in partnership with Malaysia Ecological Civilization Communication Center (MECCC), Center for Green Public History and World Green Movement Day.

During station games sharing session, a total 60 students were divided into six groups to participate in an engaging learning session about rainwater harvesting and its benefits. The session began with an introduction to the concept and purpose of rainwater harvesting, emphasizing its importance in conserving water and providing a sustainable water source. Students learned how rainwater collection systems help reduce dependence on treated water and alleviate pressure on local water resources as well as climate change mitigation.

The rainwater harvesting system shown in the photo was installed as a reward for SJKC Union, which earned First Runner-Up in the 2023 Water Audit Competition. SJKC Union is also one of the 100 participating schools in Negalitres for Schools programme.

Following this, students were introduced to the basics of conducting a home water audit. This brief explanation covered simple techniques to monitor and reduce water consumption at home, encouraging responsible water use in daily life.

To foster empathy and a deeper understanding of global water scarcity issues, students experienced a hands-on activity simulating the challenges faced by individuals in developing countries. Each group’s participants carried a 5-liter pail of water to replicate the daily hardships endured by those without direct access to clean water. This activity highlighted the significance of water conservation and provided students with a glimpse into the water struggles faced by millions worldwide.

This session successfully raised awareness among students, equipping them with knowledge about water-saving practices and inspiring them to value water as a precious resource.

Water Watch Penang would like to extend its gratitude to SJKC Union for inviting us to be part of this camp. We hope to collaborate more in the future in similar events.
