On May 7th, 2024, Water Watch Penang was privileged to be invited to deliver an environmental talk titled ‘Our Household Water Consumption and How to Use Them Wisely,’ as part of Intel Malaysia Safety Week. Dr. Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager of WWP, led the presentation, assisted by interns Ms. Atiqah and Ms. Fatin.
Dr. Hong commenced the session by outlining WWP’s objectives, achievements, and past initiatives. He highlighted Intel’s partnership with WWP on the achievement of Negalitres for Schools Programme and Intel River Ranger Programme. Dr. Hong also shown to the participants that despite Penang’s classification as a water-poor region, it experiences significant water wastage due to the remarkably low domestic tariff.
Dr. Hong also demonstrated that despite Penang’s classification as a water-poor region, it experiences significant water wastage due to the remarkably low domestic tariff.
Dr. Hong advocated for prudent water consumption, urging participants to adopt simple yet impactful measures such as turning off taps while brushing teeth, taking shorter showers, and implementing water harvesting systems to reduce reliance on tap water and alleviate water bill burdens. Participants also received guidance on calculating individual daily water consumption based on utility bills. Dr. Hong also demonstrated that the water bill should be based on a maximum daily consumption of 200 litres per capita (person) for 60 days. If the amount exceeded the figures shown during the presentation, it could indicate potential water wastage or a pipe burst. The session concluded with a brief quiz, with the top ten scorers receiving tokens of appreciation from Water Watch Penang.
Water Watch Penang extends its gratitude to Intel for the collaboration and invitation to speak. For further inquiries, please contact Dr. Hong Chern Wern, Executive Manager of WWP, at hong.wwp@gmail.com or +6019-5751253.
