On April 25th, 2024, Water Watch Penang (WWP) successfully organized the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ River and Water Education Programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Teluk Kumbar, Bayan Lepas. The program engaged more than 700 students from 8.00 am until 9.30 am. Dr. Hong Chern Wern, WWP’s Executive Manager, along with interns Ms. Fatin Azahara and Ms. Nur Atiqah, led the session, supported by WWP intern Mr. Dane Lim Chiu Tong and Mr. Hanson Yeoh, the WWP Programme Officer.
The session commenced with an informative overview of WWP’s mission and past activities. Subsequently, Ms. Nur Fatin Azahara discussed global, national, and local water crises, highlighting water scarcity as a collective challenge requiring unified action. The focus then shifted to Penang’s own water scarcity issues, particularly its dependence on Sungai Muda in Kedah as a primary water source, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Led by Ms. Nur Atiqah, the session delved into worldwide, national, and local water challenges, with a special emphasis on the widespread issue of water scarcity, demanding collective community efforts.
Moreover, Dr. Hong compared local and international water tariffs, underscoring Malaysia’s significant water consumption and the imperative for Malaysian participation in addressing this matter. An instructional video demonstrated the proper hand washing method, promoting the efficiency of self-closing taps.
The session also included showcasing a PBAPP Water Saving video to the students and teachers, as well as guiding the students to calculate their daily water consumption based on their water bill. Interactive quizzes held during the session fostered an enthusiastic ambiance, with students receiving recognition from Water Watch Penang for their active participation.
Water Watch Penang expresses appreciation to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Teluk Kumbar for their cooperation and for fostering a stimulating environment that promotes learning and involvement.
