‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOLS’: RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME AT SJKC SIN MIN– 19th SEPTEMBER 2023

Water Watch Penang (WWP) has successfully executed the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ River and Water Education Program at SJKC Sin Min, Balik Pulau, Penang, on September 19, 2023. A total of 24 students, ranging from Standard 1 to Standard 6, along with three teachers, actively participated in this enlightening program from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM.

The program commenced with Mr. Hanson Yeoh, the Programme Officer of WWP, delivering an insightful presentation. He provided a comprehensive overview of WWP’s historical background, objectives, and past endeavors. Moreover, he delved into the critical water-related issues on a global, national, and local scale, presenting essential water-related facts, strategies for water conservation, and the significant roles that rivers play in our environment and society.

Following Mr. Hanson’s engaging presentation, another facilitator, who is also an intern affiliated with WWP, Ms. Tan Ying Sing, made her education session debut. Her presentation focused on the techniques used to assess river water quality from physical, chemical, and biological perspectives. Notably, the students exhibited a strong interest throughout her presentation, particularly when she explained the various macroinvertebrates captured in rivers, highlighting their role as bioindicators for assessing river water cleanliness.

Subsequently, Mr. Hanson provided a demonstration on the correct usage of automatic push taps via playing the video, explaining their role in mitigating water wastage. Additionally, he shared valuable insights with the students regarding effective water conservation practices, emphasizing the importance of wise water usage to safeguard our environment.

Before concluding the presentation, a quiz session was conducted for the students, with prizes awarded for correct answers. Students also received the Water Saving Guidebook, a resource that offers information on water conservation strategies, provided by PBAPP. Water Watch Penang extends its heartfelt gratitude to SJK(C) Sin Min for their hosting of the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ Programme.

‘Negalitres for Schools,’ launched on 22 March 2022, was coordinated by WWP in partnership with Intel Corporation, CLEAN International, and in collaboration with Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) and PBAPP.
