28th August 2022 – A short river water education awareness programme took place on the 28th August 2022 at Taman Jajar, Sungai Ara with the participation from partners in Universiti Sains Malaysia and their research collaborators from Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia under the Long Term Research Grant Scheme (LRGS) for Water Balance research project.
This session was organised as part of the research group meeting in Penang. The session commenced welcoming speech by Prof Dr. Chan Ngai Weng, the President of Water Watch Penang followed by Dr. Hong Chern Wern leading the facilitation of the education session.
Assisted by the intern, Ms. Adeline Chong, the participants were divided into two groups whereby they get to learn about physical assessment, chemical assessment and biological assessment of the river. Under the chemical assessment, the participants analysed the river water using colorimetric method on presence of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, dissolved oxygen and pH of the river.
On the biological assessment section, the participants were guided using the ‘catch and release’ method to identify various macroinvertebrates that reflects the health of the river.
Other outcome of the session includes informal discussions on future potential collaboration with Water Watch Penang.
