3 August 2022: Water Watch Penang (WWP) has successfully organized the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ water education initiative in SJK(C) Kong Min Cawangan Kedua. More than 300 students and teachers in total participated in this water education talk of the programme.
Dr. Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager of Water Watch Penang, kicked off the water education discussion with an introduction, history and activities of WWP. Hanson Yeoh, the aquatic science intern, facilitated the rest of the topic, which included global and local water challenges as well as water conservation strategies.
The water education initiative, which was part of ‘Negalitres for Schools Programme’, intended to raise awareness of water conservation and use among the next generation. The pupils were initially introduced to the worldwide water crisis in developing nations and the problems associated with degraded water resources in wealthier countries. Furthermore, the facilitators educated the students about local water issues, such as the present state of Penang’s water supply. However, the pupils were taken aback when the facilitator informed the students that Penang is classified as a poor water state in Malaysia.
Furthermore, the facilitators explained how to properly install a ‘Washer,’ which was provided by the Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP), and the proper way to use an automatic push tap properly, as well as its purpose as a water-saving kit in decreasing water waste. Following that, the kids were ecstatic to complete mathematical calculations on their own household water bills to determine the water usage of each family member in a day, along with the facilitators’ step-by-step explanation. The students were also introduced to river water quality monitoring using physical, chemical, and biological approaches. During the presentation, kids were entertained with a water quiz, with ten colouring books awarded to those who responded correctly.
This initiative is primarily administered by Water Watch Penang (WWP), with assistance from CLEAN International, Intel Corporation, and in collaboration with PBAPP. Mr. Ang Hong Geow, the principal of SJK(C) Kong Min Cawangan Kedua, presented the facilitators with certificates at the end of the program.
