River and Water Education Programme for Alhazen Learning Center at Sungai Ara – 21st January 2025

On January 21, 2025, Water Watch Penang had the pleasure of hosting students from Alhazen Learning Center for an engaging paid educational program. A total of 21 students, aged 6 to 12, along with 4 teachers, participated in the program held at Taman Jajar Sungai Ara from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The program began with an introduction to Water Watch Penang (WWP) by Ms. Nur Atiqah, WWP’s Education Officer. She highlighted the ongoing global water crisis and emphasized that Penang is one of the water-scarce states. Following her presentation, the students were divided into four groups, each guided by a trained WWP facilitator: Ms. Fatin Azahara (WWP Education Officer), Mr. Yee Jean Chai, Ms. Fatin Amira, Ms. Khor Ci Shan, and supported by Ms. Titi.

The session continued with physical and chemical water quality assessments. Students learned how to measure river velocity using the ping-pong ball technique, determine turbidity with a Secchi disk, and conduct chemical assessments using the colorimetric technique. The chemical parameters tested included pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, and dissolved oxygen. Students had the opportunity to carry out these assessments hands-on with water samples taken directly from the river.

After a short break, the students participated in a biological assessment by catching insects that serve as bioindicators. They successfully collected a variety of macroinvertebrates, including dragonfly nymphs, pagoda snails, common damselflies, worms, and leeches. The students were enthusiastic and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the river. Following an explanation by the facilitators about the role of macroinvertebrates, all the collected insects were safely released back into the river.

Water Watch Penang extends its heartfelt thanks to Alhazen Learning Center for their cooperation and active participation in making this program a success. For further inquiries, please contact us at info.waterwatchpenang@gmail.com
