On 22 August 2024, the “Negalitres for Schools” River and Water Education Program was successfully held at SMK Raja Tun Uda by Water Watch Penang (WWP). A total of 33 students from Form 3, along with one teacher, participated in this program from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The program aimed to increase students’ awareness of water conservation and to help them understand the recent global water crisis. The presenters for this program included WWP Education Officers Ms. Atiqah and Ms. Fatin Azahara, assisted by three interns, Ms. Fatin Amira, Ms. Husna, and Ms. Khor Ci Shan.
The presentation began with Ms. Fatin Azahara introducing the goals and initiatives of WWP to the participants. She also discussed global water issues and the factors contributing to water scarcity worldwide. Through videos and photos, participants learned about the negative impacts of insufficient water resources. Additionally, the presentation highlighted that Penang has the highest water consumption in Malaysia due to water-wasting practices among Penangites, encouraged by the low water tariff.
Furthermore, students were taught how to calculate water bills, which helped them become more aware of their own water usage. Participants were also shown the proper way to operate water-saving taps and introduced to various water-saving methods. Lastly, they were required to answer quizzes, and gifts were given to those who answered correctly.
WWP extend its gratitude to SMK Raja Tun Uda for collaborating with WWP on this educational program. For further inquiries, please contact WWP’s Executive Manager, Dr. Hong Chern Wern, at hong.wwp@gmail.com, or reach out to WWP directly at +6019-5751253.
