Two water education programs for participating schools in the Rainwater Harvesting Project in Kelantan took place on the 20th and 21st of August 2024 at SK Seneng and SMK Teratak Pulai, respectively. A total of 32 students from SK Seneng and 25 students and one teacher from SMK Teratak Pulai participated in this one-hour program.
At both schools, Dr. Hong Chern Wern began the talk by providing a brief introduction to Water Watch Penang, followed by a discussion on global water issues, gradually narrowing down to national and local water challenges. He also highlighted the objectives of the rainwater harvesting system, which are to provide a supplementary water supply to the schools and reduce reliance on groundwater.
Next, WWP’s Project Assistant based in Kelantan, Ms. Siti Nornazuan (Wawa), guided the students to the rainwater harvesting tank and explained the system in detail. Ms. Wawa also took the students to the canteen to show them the UV system used to enhance the cleanliness of harvested rainwater or groundwater for consumption. During the session, Madam Intan, a teacher from SMK Teratak Pulai, shared with the students the effectiveness of the harvested rainwater in daily use at the canteen and toilet.
Dr. Hong continued the session by explaining water consumption and water-saving techniques, concluding with a quiz where students who answered correctly received a WWP notebook.
Water Watch Penang would like to thank SK Seneng and SMK Teratak Pulai for hosting us in the education session.
