SALCON SMART WATER PROGRAMME FOR SMK BANDAR BARU SUNGAI BULOH – 3RD AUGUST 2024, TAMAN RIMBA BUKIT KERINCHI, KUALA LUMPUR.

The implementation of the Salcon Smart Water Programme, a CSR Collaborative Programme between Salcon Engineering Berhad and Water Watch Penang (WWP), was held at Taman Rimba Bukit Kerinchi on August 3, 2024. Typically hosted at Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara for the past 13 years since its inception, this year’s event was relocated due to renovations at the usual venue. The new location, Taman Rimba Bukit Kerinchi, offered a visually impressive setting. The programme welcomed 39 students and 4 teachers from SMK Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh, along with Salcon Berhad’s representative, Mr. Chin Yaw Ying and , the Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Executive and Aini Suhailah Binti Mukhtar, Corporate Affairs Protégé.

The programme began with an introduction to rivers, water, and national water challenges given by Dr. Hong Chern Wern, Executive Manager of WWP supported by the Education Officers Ms. Fatin Azahara and Ms. Nur Atiqah, as well as other trained facilitators: Mr. Sharvind Sivan, Ms. Alicia Khor Hui Ying, Ms. Tew Yi Lin, and Tracy.

Four groups of students were assigned to the river activity session. The initial activity involved assessing the water’s physical and chemical properties using test kits to measure pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, phosphate, nitrate, and nitrite. The colorimetric values from the kits made the process engaging and easier for the students to grasp.

In the subsequent activity, students used tools to identify macroinvertebrates, which are indicators of river health. They enthusiastically captured various macroinvertebrates, including dragonfly nymphs, freshwater shrimp, caddisfly nymphs, and other water bugs.

At the end of the programme, Salcon awarded certificates and souvenirs to the students and teachers from SMK Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh. Water Watch Penang extended their appreciation to Salcon for their ongoing corporate social responsibility support.
