On January 29, 2024, Water Watch Penang (WWP) commenced the year with the first river and water education program at the Penang Botanical Garden. SMK Abdullah Munshi, also part of the Negalitres for Schools program and the GREW Training of Trainers (TOT) River and Water Education program, participated in this educational initiative.
A group of 28 students and 2 teachers engaged in the program from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Led by Mr. Hanson Yeoh, this program received support from trained facilitators from Universiti Sains Malaysia, including Mr. Yee Jean Chai, Ms. Khairul Barieyah, and Ms. Divya. The river activity, comprising two sessions, guided participants on a hands-on journey.
In the first session, they conducted a physical assessment exploring river velocity, temperature, and other factors to determine water quality. In the second session, a chemical assessment revealed the pH, dissolved oxygen, and other vital parameters of the river. A biological assessment followed, calculating the Biological Water Quality Index using the catch-and-release method.
