On 15th December 2023, GeoInformatic Unit, Geography Section, School of Humanities USM has successfully conducted drone river care and GIS river management programs river for 40 students from School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia as well as few participants from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris and an exchange student from Indonesia.
This program also aimed to impart knowledge on global, regional, and local water crises and emphasize the crucial importance of rivers as a vital water resource.
In this programme, the students were exposed with knowledge and hands on skills to fly a drone, test the quality of the river water and lastly map the river in USM according to the water quality scales. The facilitators involved in this programme Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Mou Leong who is an expert in drone handling.
The drone river care programme will not be completed without its GIS River Management. The GIS River Management encompassed several key components: (i) the collection of Water Quality parameters and measurement data at the USM river and lake, (ii) the compilation of data inventory using MS Excel and GIS, and (iii) training sessions on the development of digital maps for river management.
Dr. Amirul commenced the program by introducing its aims, objectives, and underscored the crucial role of technology in effective river management and monitoring. Subsequently, the students engaged in the collection of data from four sampling points along the USM river and lake. Finally, the gathered data were meticulously prepared and incorporated into GIS software for comprehensive monitoring and management purposes.
