The Young Men’s Christian Association of Penang (YMCA) hosted Water Watch Penang for an evening of water education awareness programming on September 7th, 2023, from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. There were a total of 21 participants of varying age groups who joined the program, but the majority of them were senior citizens. The session has also seen participation from a sign language group to accommodate special needs participants during that evening.
Ms. Amanda Lo, a YMCA volunteer, began the program with a welcoming address. Next the talk was delivered by Dr. Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager of WWP, who was assisted by Mr. Hanson Yeoh, the Programme Officer of WWP, in an effort to raise participants’ awareness of the need to reduce water consumption.
The presentation began with an introduction to WWP’s history, vision, and ultimate goal of achieving a water-saving society. After that, Dr. Hong explained to the audience on the worldwide, national, and local occurrences of a water crisis and its impact in his presentation. In addition, Dr. Hong encouraged participants to learn how to substantially reduce their water consumption and water bills through water auditing and water consumption assessment, as Penang has a limited water supply and is a water-scarce state. He also highlighted the activities that consume the most water at home and in the workplace, while recommending ways and equipment to reduce water consumption. Moreover, WWP provided participants with slow-flow attachments for faucets, also known as ‘Washers’ by PBAPP, along with installation instructions.
Prior to the conclusion of the program, Dr. Hong facilitated a brief Q&A session and discussion with the active participants, during which they shared their respective perspectives and queries regarding local water issues.
