23 August 2023 – Water Watch Penang (WWP) successfully conducted the ‘Negalitres for Schools’ River and Water Education Programme for students from SJKC Chung Hwa 3, Butterworth, Penang on 23rd August 2023.
A group of 55 students, comprising both standard 4 and standard 5, along with 2 teachers, participated in the program from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
WWP Program Officer, Mr. Hanson Yeoh, initiated the presentation by providing an overview of WWP’s background, objectives, and previous undertakings. He then delved into discussions about the global, national, and local water crises, methods for conserving water, innovative technologies for water preservation, and various topics linked to water resources.
Furthermore, the students were educated about the process of evaluating river water quality through physical, chemical, and biological assessments to determine its pollution level. They also gained insight into how the categorization of freshwater macroinvertebrates can be used to determine the river water quality.
In the final section, Mr. Hanson emphasized a range of water-conservation techniques that the students could apply within their households, enhancing their understanding of water preservation. Before concluding the presentation, Mr. Hanson also instructed the students on how to calculate their daily water consumption by calculating their water bills. Individuals consuming 250 liters or more of water were identified as excessive water users and were encouraged to consider adopting water-saving practices within their residences.
The program concluded with a quiz, and the fortunate winners received eight notebooks and five water tumbler. Additionally, the headmistress presented Mr. Hanson with a certificate on behalf of WWP as a token of appreciation at the end of the program.
‘Negalitres for Schools’, launched on 22 March 2022, was coordinated by WWP in partnership with Intel Corporation, CLEAN International, and in collaboration with Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) and PBAPP. This project is fully funded by CLEAN International Inc. and Intel Corporation, and is also supported by the Ministry of Environment and Water, and the Penang State Education Department.
