Water Watch Penang (WWP) through Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has organized a sustainability-based project “Eco-Wudhu’: Green Practices of Islamic Ablution” at SK Bayan Baru.
The program was led by Dr. Mohd Amirul bin Mahamud, who is a committee member of Water Watch Penang as well as Senior Lecturer from School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia.
The main objective was to promote ways of saving water while performing ablution.
The program consists of
- Chaning all traditional ablution taps to water saving taps
- Conducting Eco-Wudhu’s practice training and water saving awareness campaign, and
- Creating Eco-Wudhu’s banner at the school’s prayer hall (Surau sekolah)
On 18th August 2023, Eco-Wudhu’s practice training and water-saving awareness campaign were conducted and attended by 150 students from Year 3 and Year 4 along with five teachers from SK Bayan Lepas. SK Bayan lepas is also one of the registered schools under the Negalitres for Schools Programme. This programme is an extension on water saving initiatives held in the school.
Dr. Amirul introduced the Eco-Wudhu’ programme and encouraged water-saving practices in our daily lives. Then, an Eco-Wudhu’ project member, Dr. Mohd Azmeer bin Abu Bakar briefed the Eco-Wudhu’s practices and taught them how to perform Eco-Wudhu’.
