2nd June 2023: Water Watch Penang in the first ever collaboration with Habitat Foundation, have successfully conducted its core programme, the ‘River and Water Education Programme at the Prince of Wales Island International School (POWIIS) at Balik Pulau on the 2nd of June 2023. Also, this was the second education session conducted for POWIIS in school after the first tailor-made geography programme was conducted at Taman Jajar Sungai Ara in the year 2023.
Invited by Habitat Foundation and attended by two teachers, 6 students aged between 13-16 years old and Mr. Eric Shaun Seaton, the Comms Manager of Habitat Foundation, this programme was conducted by the Executive Manager of WWP, Dr. Hong Chern Wern.
The 2-hour programme comprised of awareness raising session on global, national and local water issues, river and water monitoring session as well as ways to save water at home and also at school. Student were also required to collect river water samples for an indoor water quality sampling session.
The objective/aim of this programme was to raise awareness and educate the students, about various aspects related to rivers and water that includes behavioural change by encouraging them to adopt water-saving practices and become responsible water users both at home and in school.
Overall, the River and Water Education Programme seeks to empower participants with knowledge, skills, and a sense of responsibility towards water resources, promoting a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to water management.
