The fifth and final Salcon Smart Water Program of the year took place on the 12th November 2022 at Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara in collaboration with Salcon Berhad. A total of 40 Form 6 students, and 4 teachers from SMK Bukit Gading attended this river activity.
The purpose of this river activity was to educate and share information with the students about rivers and water on a global, regional, and local level, with a particular emphasis on Selangor. Dr. Hong Chern Wern served as the program’s lead facilitator assisted by Mr. Sharvind Sivan, Ms. Adeline Chong, intern, Mr. Ooi Che Khai, Ms. Nur Aina Syahira, and Ms. Alicia Khor.
Dr. Hong commenced the program by outlining the country’s water issue and the importance of water conservation to the students. Then, he divided the students into 4 groups and gave them instructions on how to perform physical, and chemical assessments on the river water to determine the quality of the river water, including measuring pH, ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite, among other things.
During the intermission, the President of Water Watch Penang, Prof. Dr. Chan Ngai Weng, gave his speech by sharing his experience to the students so that they can understand how blessed they are to live in Malaysia which has an adequate and clean water supply.
During the final session, the students were also instructed to use the “catch and release” method and compute the number of species of macroinvertebrates found so that the Biological Water Quality Index of the water can be determined. After the calculation and comparison among the 4 group members, we could conclude that the river is a class B, clean river. River shrimp, crayfish, pagoda snails, and damselfly nymphs, many developmental stages of dragonfly nymphs have also been captured and photographed. At the end of the programme, the students were presented with certificates and souvenirs courtesy of Salcon Berhad, the main sponsor of this programme.
