27 August 2022: Water Watch Penang (WWP) hosted a water education programme, the “Negalitres for Schools” Programme, on the 27th of August 2022 at SMK Kampong Selamat. A total of 64 Form 4 students and 2 teachers from the school along with Cik Fatin Habsah Binti Ahmad, the Senior Assistant Environmental Health Officer from Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai.
Dr. Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager of Water Watch Penang (WWP), began the session by briefing the students on the history of WWP, followed by its activities and announcing prize-winning contests in which they may also participate, projects/events performed in partnership with other organizations, and the objective we’re striving towards.
Next, Dr. Hong demonstrated via PowerPoint slides on the Malaysian water situation, primarily in Penang, such as how Penang is listed as one of the water-deprived states and Penangites’ excessive water consumption. All of this was done to raise awareness among the children about the significance of water conservation. Students were also taught about water-related local institutions in charge of water concerns, such as the water treatment agency (Indah Water), the water service unit (PBAPP), and so on. Besides, a Q&A session took place during the programme to pique the pupils’ interest and to allow interaction between students and facilitators. A small gift was given to those who answered correctly as a piece of appreciation.
Speaking of PBAPP (Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang), the water-saving kits sponsored by them were also provided to the pupils. They were also educated about the way to utilize those water conservation gadgets. Moreover, videos contrasting the water output before and after the installation of the water-saving kits, as well as how residents in other nations barefoot trek around 10km or more to collect unclean water, were presented. This helps create an impact on the students as to show them how precious and appreciative we are to be able to drink pure water.
This programme was coordinated by WWP, in partnership with Intel Corporation, CLEAN International, and in collaboration with MBSP and PBAPP.
