After months of trainings and preparations by the teachers and students of Water Genius Challenge, the Phase 2 Water Genius Challenge, which is the implementation phase, commenced on the 5th of April 2021. The commencement of WGC at school was to be concurrent with the two ToT sessions. However, due to Covid-19 Movement Control Order (MCO) which has resulted in delays and changes in school timing, the final two ToT sessions were conducted in the following month which took place on-line via zoom, on the 22nd and 29th May 2021.
One of the implementation processes is the need for the teachers to integrate river and water education component into the school’s existing curriculum, thus, in this final ToT session on Curriculum Integration of River-Water Related Topics, the objectives were:
- To provide environmental education,
- To empower and inspire teachers to teach water and river related topics in schools.
A smart partnership between, Water Watch Penang, Salcon Engineering Berhad, Cap-Net and MyCDNet, and supported by the Ministry of Education, Selangor, the ToT was split into two sessions to provide better support and focus discussion for a total of 23 teachers from seven national schools in Selangor/Kuala Lumpur. Guided by two experienced facilitators, the teachers were trained in integrating river-water topics into the following school subjects and syllabus:
- Malay Language
- English Language
- History
- Mathematics
- Additional Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Geography/Science
Prior to the main ToT session, teachers from each participating school were required to present and report on their progress. Some teachers have already started the initiatives in curriculum integration. As the Water Genius Challenge has started its school implementation stage, the organizer has also shared and briefed the teachers on the marking requirements as well. The cutting off date for the Water Genius Challenge will take place by end of September whereby the participants will be preparing competition and presentation in the month of October. The judging period will be conducted on in the month of November 2021.
