The Phase 1 Training of Trainers on Water Genius Programme has successfully took off from the month of September to November 2020. In partnership with Salcon Engineering Berhad and supported by Cap-Net, MyCDNet, Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara, and Ministry of Education of Malaysia the objectives of this Water Genius Challenge are:
- To provide environmental education,
- To empower students to take action creatively, and
- To promote participation/partnership from everyone in schools.
With the aim to encourage water stewardship amongst students, teachers and other stakeholders in schools, this programme is in-line with the following Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG4: Quality Education
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
SDG11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
SDG13: Climate Action
SDG17: Partnerships for the Goals
A total of ten schools initiated their interested about the programme however due to heavy schedule resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic, a total of 5 schools registered for the programme. Teachers from the registered schools in Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley, participated in the four series of Training of Trainers (ToT) programme to prepare the schools for the ‘water-audit’ based competition, the Water Genius Challenge. The four series of ToT involves training on Theoretical and Practical Water Audit Implementation, Proposal Development, Water Footprint for schools and Global, National and Local Water Issues.
The second phase of Water Genius Programme which involves implementation of the water audit project will commence in the month of January 2021 with the top prize of RM3000 for winning school, sponsored by Salcon Engineering Berhad.
As this is the first water-audit based competition, this project is expected to produce long term outcome in water stewardship practices; via gauging aspects in constant reduction in water consumption, sharing and applying knowledge not in only schools, but at home, to friends and colleagues as well.
